This was our only full day with Teresa, so we headed down to the coast at Seascale to enjoy the wind, waves, and water. Teresa grew up along the Welsh coast in Snowdonia, and has a special love for the sea. These pictures help explain why.

Though windy, the air was mild, and we decided to hike in the afternoon. Armed with AllTrails, GPS, and a geographical map of trails on the western fells, we drove up to Nether Wasdale (a tiny village on the southern end of Wast Water), just a few miles from our cottage. We parked at St. Michael’s, a plain but welcoming church.

Then we embarked on a most lovely, two-hour ramble through fields and woods to the southern shore of Wast Water.

By the time we reached the lake, we were warm from exertion, and Teresa convinced us to have a quick dip before continuing on our way. Chilly but refreshing, and quite the most memorable part of the day’s hike.

A boat house on Wast Water.

We hurried a bit on the way back, mainly because Teresa had made a rich fruitcake with spectacular brown sugar crackles on top, and it was calling our name. Perfect after a long afternoon ramble with a cup of strong tea.

After a meal of stir fry and rice, the evening was spent in conversation and laughter in front of the cosy fire. We will miss Teresa….
